About the editorShort answer
For a British Airways-operated disruption, start at BA's official Complaints and claims page and choose a new claim. Keep fixed compensation, documented expenses and a ticket refund separate. If you already have a case, update it with its reference instead of opening another.

Which rules can apply to British Airways flights
British Airways is registered here as a UK carrier.
- UK261 can apply when this UK carrier departs the UK, arrives in the UK from abroad, or arrives in the EU from abroad.
- EU261 can apply to its flights that depart from an airport in an EU member state (plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), whichever airline operates them.
- Whether a given flight is covered still depends on the operating carrier, the airports, the delay at final arrival and the stated cause.
This is orientation from the carrier's registration, not advice on a specific flight. Use the calculator for a preliminary check.

Guides relevant to British Airways
Route guides through LHR/LGW
Route guides are not specific to British Airways: several airlines fly most of these routes, so confirm the operating carrier on your booking.
Alliance, group and hub facts last checked against Wikipedia: British Airways, oneworld: member airlines. These are not delay statistics: FlightRefundCalc does not publish punctuality or compensation-outcome figures for British Airways.
British Airways: how to prepare your claim
BA gives existing claimants an update route as well as a new-claim form. Use that distinction: an extra Heathrow hotel receipt belongs with the original disruption case, not in a second complaint. The airline warns that duplicate cases can lengthen the wait.
Choose the BA request and keep its reference
Open Complaints and claims, then start a new complaint or claim for disrupted-flight compensation or expenses. Later, use Track and update your case to add information. Describe fixed compensation and receipted costs as separate requests. A refund for a journey you will not take is a booking decision; do not cancel a flight you still need just to open a complaint.
Heathrow connection or partner-operated flight?
For an illustrative Edinburgh–Heathrow–New York booking, keep both sectors and the actual New York arrival; the London delay alone does not describe the missed connection. A BA flight number sold with an American Airlines-operated sector needs an operator check. BA is a UK carrier: UK departures and qualifying inbound journeys use the UK framework, while an EU departure can bring EU261 into the assessment.
When BA's answer does not settle the case
If BA cites air traffic restrictions at Heathrow, ask which restriction affected this flight and how the rerouting decision was made. Distinguish airport restrictions from an airline staffing explanation; neither a news headline nor another passenger's outcome establishes your case. The public claims hub gives no measured average response time. Keep its case number, then use BA's published CEDR route if the dispute meets the scheme's eligibility rules.

Prepare and send your request
- 1
Choose the request
Use the complaints page for compensation or expense reimbursement. For an unused-ticket refund after cancellation, follow BA's booking options; agency bookings should start with the seller. Do not cancel a journey you still intend to take just to request compensation.
- 2
Prepare one complete record
Collect passenger names, booking reference, affected flight details, contact details and evidence. For expenses, include itemised receipts. If acting for another passenger, follow BA's signed-authorisation requirements.
- 3
Submit on the airline's site
Follow “Start a new complaint or claim”. Read the category and upload prompts before sending. Supply any requested payment details only to BA, never to this calculator. Save the submitted text and confirmation.
- 4
Use the existing case reference
Return to BA's track/update options to add evidence or expenses. BA asks passengers not to open a duplicate case while a response is outstanding. If unresolved, read the CAA escalation guidance and BA's CEDR information before taking the next step.
Check the route before the amount
London → New York, operated by BA
UK departure: the UK route test starts here. Timing, notice and cause still require assessment.
New York → London, operated by BA
UK arrival on a UK airline: the carrier matters as well as the destination.
BA booking, partner-operated sector
Check the actual operator. The marketing code alone does not settle coverage or where to claim.
Use the facts before you act
A BA flight number on a ticket does not prove BA operated that sector. Check the operating airline before choosing the claims channel. Prepare the facts here, then send evidence only through the airline's official website. For an urgent rebooking or refund decision, use BA's booking support rather than waiting for a complaint response.
Worked example
Illustrative case: a BA-operated New York JFK to London Heathrow flight is scheduled to arrive at 07:00 but reaches the gate at 11:20. Record the four-hour-twenty-minute final-arrival difference and ask for the disruption cause. This UK arrival on a UK operating carrier passes the basic route-coverage check; it is not a compensation decision. List any documented waiting expenses separately from the compensation request. A booking sold by BA but operated by another airline needs a fresh carrier check.
A practical evidence checklist
- Booking reference and names of the passengers included in the request.
- Operating carrier for each affected sector, plus flight numbers and travel dates.
- Original schedule, actual final arrival, cancellation notice time and replacement itinerary.
- An expense list with date, purpose, currency and itemised receipt for each amount.
- Signed authority where BA requires it for passengers represented by someone else.
- Existing BA case reference and copies of prior messages, if already submitted.
Keep the legal questions separate
A disruption can create different questions about care while waiting, refund versus rerouting, a possible statutory compensation framework and expenses. An airline’s written explanation may affect one question without deciding all the others. Use official authority guidance and qualified advice for a decision with legal or financial consequences.
Check your own journey, not an example.
The calculator asks for the operating carrier, route, notice and disruption facts before showing a preliminary result. It does not guarantee compensation.

Common questions
Where is the official British Airways claim route?+
Open BA's Complaints and claims page linked above and choose “Start a new complaint or claim”. That page also has tracking and update routes for existing cases.
Are expenses the same as compensation?+
No. Expenses concern documented costs; fixed compensation depends on the applicable rules and disruption facts. Keep the two requests and their supporting evidence separate.
Should I open a second BA case to add a receipt?+
BA directs passengers to its existing-case update options and warns that duplicate cases can delay an update. Keep and use your original reference.
Does a four-hour delay guarantee payment?+
No. The route, operating carrier, actual final-arrival delay, cancellation or rerouting facts and cause still matter. Ask BA for its written assessment.
