Which rules can apply to KLM flights
KLM is registered here as an EU/EEA-regime carrier.
- EU261 can apply to departures from EU airports on any airline, and to arrivals into the EU from outside the EU when an EU carrier operates the flight.
- UK261 can apply to this EU carrier on departures from UK airports and on arrivals into the UK from abroad.
- Whether a given flight is covered still depends on the operating carrier, the airports, the delay at final arrival and the stated cause.
This is orientation from the carrier's registration, not advice on a specific flight. Use the calculator for a preliminary check.

KLM: how to prepare your claim
For a KLM journey through Amsterdam Schiphol, distinguish three requests before you start: compensation for disruption, repayment of necessary expenses, and refund of unused transport. KLM's website separates these routes, so choosing the right one helps the case describe what you actually lost.
Cash, vouchers and unexpected expenses
Open KLM's compensation page for the online claim and record whether you request money or accept a voucher. Compare a voucher's restrictions before accepting it; a larger advertised face value is not the same as cash. For meals or other necessary costs, use the additional-expenses route and upload itemised receipts. List sums already reimbursed so the airline can see the outstanding balance without confusing it with the fixed compensation amount.
Show what happened at Schiphol
For one-ticket connections, present the scheduled final arrival and the actual arrival after rebooking, with both boarding passes where available. A missed flight caused by late arrival is different from reaching a gate late after a passenger's own delay. If KLM attributes the disruption to an airport restriction, ask how that restriction affected your flight and whether another routing was available. For an Air France, Delta or other partner-operated leg, identify that operator explicitly.
Route coverage and case updates
As an EU operator, KLM can bring inbound EU travel within EU261 even when departure was outside Europe. UK departures and qualifying arrivals into the UK also need a UK261 check. KLM says it will communicate claim status and expected payment timing; its public compensation page does not establish one universal payout period. Keep the case acknowledgement and ask for a status update on that case rather than treating an automated receipt as approval.
