AMS: connections and disruption help
At Schiphol, concentrate on your pier, gate and Schengen status rather than looking for a terminal shuttle. A gate change and an extra border checkpoint can change the practical connection even inside the same airport complex.
Recalculate the route after a gate change
Use Schiphol's transfer planner with both flights and check the walking route on its airport map. Keep the onward flight number available because airport screens may show a codeshare number differently from your booking. If you need a new boarding pass, use the airline transfer desk or kiosk instead of heading for landside check-in without advice. Record when staff confirm that a connection is no longer possible.
Security and passport control are separate checks
The airport explains that repeat security depends on where you arrived from; border control depends on crossing the Schengen boundary. Do not treat the absence of another security check as proof that there is no passport queue. For a tight connection, show the boarding pass to staff and ask about the appropriate route rather than leaving the queue on your own.
Choose an overnight solution you can access
Before accepting a hotel, establish whether it is before or after passport control and whether your entry documents permit the required route. Ask where checked luggage will remain during the night. Save the arrival gate, onward gate, border or transfer-desk instructions and hotel location. A connecting passenger kept in transit has different practical options from someone already in Schiphol's public arrivals hall.

Departing from AMS
A journey departing Amsterdam Airport Schiphol normally starts with the EU261 route test. The operating carrier, final ticketed destination, timing and airline-recorded cause still determine the next step.
Arriving at AMS
For a flight arriving at AMS from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, identify whether the operating airline is an EU/EEA/Swiss carrier. The marketing airline on the ticket may be different.
