Which rules can apply to Iberia flights

Iberia is registered here as an EU/EEA-regime carrier.

  • EU261 can apply to departures from EU airports on any airline, and to arrivals into the EU from outside the EU when an EU carrier operates the flight.
  • UK261 can apply to this EU carrier on departures from UK airports and on arrivals into the UK from abroad.
  • Whether a given flight is covered still depends on the operating carrier, the airports, the delay at final arrival and the stated cause.

This is orientation from the carrier's registration, not advice on a specific flight. Use the calculator for a preliminary check.

Route guides through MAD

Route guides are not specific to Iberia: several airlines fly most of these routes, so confirm the operating carrier on your booking.

Alliance, group and hub facts last checked against Wikipedia: Iberia (airline), oneworld: member airlines. These are not delay statistics: FlightRefundCalc does not publish punctuality or compensation-outcome figures for Iberia.

Iberia: how to prepare your claim

Iberia's claims hub offers both a new claim and access to existing cases. Select the cancellation, delay or flight-change category and keep the resulting case reference. This is particularly useful for a Madrid connection where the replacement itinerary and arrival evidence may be added after the original disruption.

Use both booking code and ticket number

The claims guidance asks for the booking code and relevant ticket number when requesting a cancellation refund after declining the offered alternative. For a completed late journey, describe compensation separately from that refund. The hub also offers travel or disruption documents and case tracking. Keep those documents with the original booking rather than replacing it with only the final reissued ticket.

A Madrid hub connection may involve another operator

For an illustrative Bilbao–Madrid–Buenos Aires booking, show the complete itinerary and Buenos Aires arrival. Check whether a feeder was operated by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum; the IB marketing code is insufficient on its own. Iberia's Spanish operating status is relevant to a return from Argentina into the EU. A flight on a non-EU partner requires a fresh assessment rather than inheriting Iberia's status from the sale.

Compare the response with the category you actually claimed

The claims hub states an aim of seven business days, with complex cases potentially taking up to 21 days. Other Iberia FAQs discuss an initial reply, so do not present an acknowledgement as settlement. If the case is rejected on connection or cancellation-notice grounds, supply the original through-ticket or dated notification that addresses that precise issue. Keep a written distinction between compensation, reimbursement and any voucher offered.
