The great-circle distance between VIE and IST is approximately 1,223 km, in the up to 1,500 km band. This endpoint calculation does not add detours. For a through connection, check the original departure and last ticketed destination before selecting a compensation band.
Vienna International (VIE), sometimes called Schwechat, is not Bratislava (BTS). A reroute to Bratislava should include discussion of the cross-border surface leg. At the Istanbul end, distinguish IST from SAW before measuring whether the replacement actually completes your booking.
VIE is an EU/EEA departure, so EU261 scope does not depend on the operating airline being European. For VIE–IST, test the actual disruption and cause next. If another regime also applies, the same disruption is not an invitation to collect duplicate compensation.
Turkish Airlines' Vienna departure can be within EU261; its Istanbul-origin arrival at VIE is a different case because the airline is outside the EU. If a single reservation continues beyond IST, retain the last arrival and the operator of each disrupted sector rather than only the Austrian segment.
Istanbul Airport (IST) is not Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Before accepting a rebooking described only as Istanbul, inspect both airport codes. A same-airport gate change and a journey across the city create very different transport, baggage and entry requirements.
