Istanbul Airport (IST) is not Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Before accepting a rebooking described only as Istanbul, inspect both airport codes. A same-airport gate change and a journey across the city create very different transport, baggage and entry requirements.
Choose the correct transfer category
The airport's transfer guide distinguishes the passenger journey according to the arriving and departing flight. An international-to-domestic connection involves different formalities from staying on an international itinerary. Show both boarding passes at the airline transfer desk if you are unsure which route applies. Check whether your bag is tagged beyond Istanbul instead of relying solely on a short airline-app connection message.
Walking and queues both belong in the timeline
IST provides waiting-time information for airport processes, but a displayed estimate is not a guarantee that a particular connection will be made. Preserve the inbound gate, onward gate, time you were directed to transfer security and any assistance request. If a gate changes while you are walking, keep the notification. Do not replace the actual boarding deadline with the scheduled aircraft departure time.
A switch to SAW needs an explicit plan
Ask who is arranging the airport transfer and how the checked bag will be handled if the replacement departs from SAW. Confirm that you can enter Türkiye before leaving the international transit area. Keep road-transfer instructions and receipts with the original and revised itinerary. If the airline instead places you overnight near IST, record its hotel and return-check-in directions separately from a voluntary city visit.

Departing from IST
Departure from İstanbul Airport alone does not create a fixed EU261 or UK261 band. An arrival into the EU/EEA/Switzerland or UK may require the operating carrier's status to be checked.
Arriving at IST
If IST is the final destination, keep the scheduled and actual door-open or arrival record. Coverage can come from the departure country or operating carrier rather than this airport's location.
