The great-circle distance between LHR and IST is approximately 2,487 km, in the 1,500–3,500 km band. This endpoint calculation does not add detours. For a through connection, check the original departure and last ticketed destination before selecting a compensation band.
Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) sit on different sides of the city. This Heathrow guide is for IST. A replacement to SAW may require a cross-city transfer before an IST connection; do not accept the city label Istanbul as confirmation of a workable interchange.
LHR departure puts this direction within UK261's territorial scope on any operating airline. That does not establish payment: arrival delay, cancellation notice, replacement timings and the proven cause still matter. Assess IST–LHR separately; a return ticket does not make both directions identical.
Turkish Airlines is a non-EU/non-UK operator. The Heathrow departure can be protected under UK261, but its standalone Istanbul-origin return cannot use UK arrival as the only basis. A British Airways-operated return is a different operator test; confirm the actual company rather than the ticket seller.
Istanbul Airport (IST) is not Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Before accepting a rebooking described only as Istanbul, inspect both airport codes. A same-airport gate change and a journey across the city create very different transport, baggage and entry requirements.
