Which rules can apply to Cathay Pacific flights

Cathay Pacific is not registered here as an EU or UK carrier.

  • EU261 and UK261 generally apply to its flights only when they depart from an airport in the EU/EEA/Switzerland or the UK.
  • Flights on this airline that arrive in the EU or UK from elsewhere are generally outside EU261/UK261, but other national or contractual rules may apply.
  • Check which airline operated each leg: a code-share ticket can combine carriers with different coverage.

This is orientation from the carrier's registration, not advice on a specific flight. Use the calculator for a preliminary check.

Cathay Pacific: how to prepare your claim

A Cathay Pacific claim should reconstruct the journey through Hong Kong International (HKG), especially when rerouting changed an onward Asian connection. Save the CX flight details and original arrival promise. A service complaint about the cabin, a baggage report and a flight-delay compensation claim can share an incident but require different evidence.

Send a post-travel complaint to Customer Care

Cathay's Complaints, compliments and suggestions page is the official written route for feedback about the completed flight. Describe the disruption and requested compensation rather than selecting an unrelated loyalty issue. For urgent rebooking, the Contact Us support channels are separate. Include the ticket, booking reference and any replacement boarding pass; save the submitted wording so a later response can be checked against the actual request.

Hong Kong is outside EU and UK carrier coverage

Cathay is not an EU or UK carrier. An EU-origin CX departure can qualify for EU261 and a UK departure for UK261, subject to the disruption conditions. A standalone Hong Kong departure to either region does not gain coverage merely through its destination. On a covered through-booking, show the HKG transfer and final endpoint rather than treating every sector as a separate ticket.

Weather evidence needs the affected date and operation

If a refusal refers to severe Hong Kong weather, ask for the relevant restriction and its connection to your flight; the existence of a storm elsewhere is not a complete explanation by itself. Check whether the reply also deals with care and the rerouting you requested. No universal Cathay compensation-response or payout period has been verified here. Keep the Customer Care reference and request a clear decision if the answer addresses only general feedback.
