The great-circle distance between LHR and LAX is approximately 8,760 km, in the over 3,500 km band. This endpoint calculation does not add detours. For a through connection, check the original departure and last ticketed destination before selecting a compensation band.
Los Angeles means LAX in this guide. Long Beach, Burbank, Ontario and Orange County are distinct airports; an offer to the Los Angeles area needs an actual airport code. A West Coast reroute through a US hub can introduce immigration, baggage collection and a domestic flight, so compare final LAX arrival rather than the transatlantic landing.
LHR departure puts this direction within UK261's territorial scope on any operating airline. That does not establish payment: arrival delay, cancellation notice, replacement timings and the proven cause still matter. Assess LAX–LHR separately; a return ticket does not make both directions identical.
For a replacement itinerary through New York or Chicago, retain both boarding passes and the revised connection. Ask the airline to confirm whether the domestic leg is included. A separate onward booking from LAX to Hawaii is not silently added to a Heathrow–LAX claim merely because both flights were on the same day.
LAX's current inter-terminal guidance describes connected post-security walkways across the terminals, following its 2023 changes. Older advice that always requires exiting security between the north and south terminals can be out of date.
