JFK: connections and disruption help

At New York JFK, changing terminals commonly involves the AirTrain and a new terminal entry process. A booking marketed as “New York” can also include Newark or LaGuardia, which are separate airports rather than JFK terminals.

Confirm the terminal for the operating flight

Use JFK's live terminal and connection guide after any rebooking. A codeshare's marketing airline is not enough to identify where the aircraft departs. Ask the airline how bags will be handled and whether you must collect them before travelling to another terminal. If the route requires passing security again, include that checkpoint and the boarding cutoff in the available time.

International arrival formalities come before a domestic connection

Ask the airline for the arrival and baggage process for your specific itinerary, including whether the flight was precleared before reaching the US. Do not assume that a through bag tag or an international onward destination eliminates US entry formalities. Keep required US travel documents accessible and ask staff about the next check-in route before leaving the customs area.

A Newark or LaGuardia replacement needs a ground plan

For EWR or LGA, request the exact airport, confirmed flight and transport arrangement before accepting. JFK publishes airport-change transport guidance, but public transport availability does not itself mean the airline has arranged or paid for the trip. Save your old JFK terminal, replacement airport, baggage instruction and each transfer receipt. Compare arrival at the original final destination, not only the departure time of the next New York-area flight.

Departing from JFK

A U.S. departure does not create an EU/UK-style fixed delay payment. U.S. DOT rules focus on refunds after cancellations or significant changes and on involuntary denied boarding; an EU or UK connection can change the framework.

Arriving at JFK

If JFK is the final destination, keep the scheduled and actual door-open or arrival record. Coverage can come from the departure country or operating carrier rather than this airport's location.
