London Stansted Airport (STN) passenger rights

Practical preparation for a delay, cancellation or missed connection involving London, Essex. Start with the complete ticketed journey and operating airline—not the airport name alone.

STN: connections and disruption help

Stansted's official guidance tells connecting passengers to pass through arrivals, including passport control where applicable, baggage reclaim and customs, then check in again. An itinerary with two STN flights should not be planned as a simple airside hub transfer.

Check UK entry documents before accepting a connection

A short stop at Stansted can still require crossing the UK border. Verify the documents required for your nationality and circumstances before taking a replacement that depends on leaving and re-entering departures. Ask the next airline for its check-in and baggage cutoff, particularly if your inbound flight is already late. The time between scheduled landing and takeoff is not all usable transfer time.

Understand the separate-ticket exposure

If you built the connection from two independent bookings, contact the onward airline promptly when the first leg is disrupted. Keep both booking references and any platform guarantee, rather than assuming the first airline automatically controls the second ticket. Ask about a change before buying an entirely new flight, and save the options and prices actually offered at the time.

London airport names are not interchangeable

A replacement at LTN, LGW, LHR or LCY adds a road or rail journey outside Stansted. Obtain the exact code, terminal and ground-transport arrangement. Record baggage-collection time, the new check-in deadline and any message directing you to another airport. Stansted's airline directory helps identify the operating carrier's contact, while the airport board provides a separate record of the original flight status.

Departing from STN

A journey departing London Stansted Airport normally starts with UK261 coverage, whatever the operating airline's nationality. Compensation still depends on the disruption, final-arrival delay, notice, rerouting and cause.

Arriving at STN

For a flight arriving at STN from outside the UK, check whether the operator is a UK or EU airline. A UK destination alone does not cover every foreign airline; a UK operator can also bring certain EU-bound journeys within UK rules.
