ORD: connections and disruption help

At Chicago O'Hare, Terminal 5 is important for many international arrivals, but not every international departure leaves there. A missed connection can involve customs, baggage and a terminal change, not just a new gate.

Complete the applicable US arrival process first

O'Hare's guidance explains the immigration, customs and checked-baggage steps for international arrivals that require them. Confirm the recheck arrangement with the onward airline before leaving Terminal 5. The airport specifically distinguishes passengers checked through with certain carriers from those who must take their bags to another terminal. Keep the bag tag and staff instructions if the replacement changes airline.

Choose between the airside bus and public ATS correctly

The Terminal Transfer Bus is for eligible connecting passengers with a same-day departing boarding pass. Its published service hours and stops are different from the public Airport Transit System. Outside the applicable bus service or when your journey requires landside processing, the route may involve ATS and fresh TSA screening. Check the current service information rather than assuming a bus will always preserve your airside connection.

A Midway offer changes the airport

MDW is a separate Chicago airport. Before accepting it, ask the airline about road or rail transport, luggage and the new check-in deadline. Record your arrival terminal, customs/recheck sequence, transfer mode and final destination delay. If a weather or traffic-control explanation is given, request the specific restriction affecting the flight instead of assuming every Chicago disruption has the same cause.

Departing from ORD

A U.S. departure does not create an EU/UK-style fixed delay payment. U.S. DOT rules focus on refunds after cancellations or significant changes and on involuntary denied boarding; an EU or UK connection can change the framework.

Arriving at ORD

If ORD is the final destination, keep the scheduled and actual door-open or arrival record. Coverage can come from the departure country or operating carrier rather than this airport's location.
