Airport delay and cancellation guide

Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) passenger rights

Practical preparation for a delay, cancellation or missed connection involving Barcelona. Start with the complete ticketed journey and operating airline—not the airport name alone.

BCN: connections and disruption help

Barcelona-El Prat's T1 and T2 are linked by a free shuttle, not a short walk between adjacent gates. A disruption that moves you to a carrier in the other terminal changes the practical recovery plan.

Check the exact replacement departure building

The original airline's terminal is not a safe assumption for a replacement booked with another carrier. Confirm T1 or T2 using Aena's current flight information, then check the airline's check-in and baggage deadline. Aena's connection guide distinguishes arrivals and departures by terminal and Schengen status, including routes that pass through arrivals and passport control before the shuttle.

Collecting a bag can change the entire transfer

If the checked bag is tagged only to BCN, ask where to collect it before leaving the arrival flow. For separate tickets, allow for reclaim, the terminal shuttle, bag drop and security. With a through booking, ask the transfer staff whether they will retag or reroute the bag. Carrying only hand luggage does not by itself remove border or boarding-pass requirements.

Keep BCN separate from other Catalonia airports

An offer involving Girona (GRO) or Reus (REU) is an airport change, not a Barcelona terminal change. Ask the airline to explain the ground journey, timing and cost before acceptance. For your records, capture both airport codes, the replacement terminal, any baggage instruction and shuttle or road-transport receipts. Aena's information desks can help locate the correct airline desk, but cannot substitute for the airline's confirmed rerouting offer.

Departing from BCN

A journey departing Barcelona–El Prat Airport normally starts with the EU261 route test. The operating carrier, final ticketed destination, timing and airline-recorded cause still determine the next step.

Arriving at BCN

For a flight arriving at BCN from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, identify whether the operating airline is an EU/EEA/Swiss carrier. The marketing airline on the ticket may be different.
